What is Child Benefit?

Child Benefit is a government payment that helps parents and guardians with the cost of raising children. You can claim Child Benefit if you're responsible for a child who is:

  • Under 16,or
  • Under 20if they stay in approved education or training (like school or college).

You can claim for as many children as you have, but only one person can receive Child Benefit for each child

Who can get Child Benefit?

You can claim Child Benefit if:

  • ou live in the UK or certain other countries.
  • You're responsible for a child under 16 (or under 20 if they stay in approved education or training).
  • You contribute to their care financially (for example, providing food, clothing, or pocket money).

Foster parents and adoptive parents can also claim, as long as the local council doesn’t pay for the child’s accommodation or maintenance. If you’re looking after someone else’s child, you may also be eligible.

How much will you get?

There are two Child Benefit rates:

  • £26.05 per week for your eldest or only child.
  • £17.25 per week for each additional child.

If your family circumstances change, such as a split or a new partner moving in, the rate may vary.

When & how is it paid?

Child Benefit is usually paid every 4 weeks, either on a Monday or Tuesday. If you're a single parent or receive benefits like Universal Credit, you may be able to get weekly payments.

Payments are made directly to your bank account, but they cannot be paid into certain types of accounts (like a Post Office card account).

Additional benefits of Child Benefit

Even if you don’t need the cash payments, you should still claim Child Benefit for the following benefits:

  • National Insurance credits: These count towards your State Pension. They help prevent gaps in your National Insurance record if you’re not working or earning enough to pay National Insurance contributions.
  • National Insurance number for your child: Your child will usually get their National Insurance number shortly before they turn 16 without needing to apply for it.

Earning over £60,000?

If either you or your partner earns more than £60,000 a year, you may have to pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge. The charge is equal to the amount you receive from Child Benefit, so you won’t actually keep the money, but you will still get other benefits like National Insurance credits.

  • If your adjusted net income is over £60,000, use the Child Benefit tax calculator to work out how much charge you may need to pay.
  • If either you or your partner earn £80,000 or more, you will not receive any extra money from Child Benefit, as the charge will equal the amount of your payment..

How Child Benefit Helps Your State Pension

By claiming Child Benefit, you automatically receive National Insurance credits if your child is under 12. These credits contribute to your State Pension, preventing gaps if you’re not working or not earning enough to pay National Insurance contributions.

Special Cases

  • Foster Parents: You can claim for foster children unless the local council pays for their accommodation or maintenance.
  • Adoptive Parents: You can claim as soon as the child comes to live with you, even before the adoption is complete.
  • Guardians: If you're responsible for a child whose parents have passed away, you may be eligible for Guardian’s Allowance in addition to Child Benefit.

Living abroad

If you’re living abroad or planning to move to the UK, you might still be eligible for Child Benefit. Specific rules apply depending on your employment status, immigration status, and whether you're a family member of someone with settled status in the UK.

Important notes about Child Benefit

  • person only: Only one person can claim for each child, so you and your partner need to decide who should apply.
  • Changes in circumstances: Always report any changes, such as a child leaving home or moving in with a new partner, to the Child Benefit Office.
  • Living abroad: You may still be eligible for Child Benefit if you live in certain countries or if you're a UK government worker abroad.
